If my Jewellery for Knitters isn’t right for the knitter in your life then perhaps one of these books will be. I’ve compiled a list of my favourites, with a few (hopefully) helpful notes. These are all available to buy from Amazon.
Beginner Knitting Books
I always turn to my copies of Stitch ‘n Bitch when I’m looking up a technique. They have very clear diagrams and incredibly well written instructions.
I came across Purls of Wisdom at a friend’s knitting evening. It includes, history, patterns and more fantastically clear diagrams. A great place to start if you’re learning or re-learning the art of knitting.
My favourite pattern books
I love designer Ysolda Teague’s knitting patterns. I have all 3 of these books. The patterns are very clearly written. The Whimsical Little Knits series has lots of quick small projects which make ideal gifts and are slightly unusual but all very stylish.
Little Red in the City is a book of sweater and cardigan patterns. It also contains an incredible amount of information on the design process and how to change patterns to ensure a completely perfect fit.
Boutique Knits is a favourite of mine for stylish accessories.
Sock Innovation and knit. sock. love. by Cookie A. are full of truly unique patterns, they are fairly complex but very rewarding. They also contains a lot of information about the designs and techniques used.
A Stitch in Time is an amazing collection of vintage patterns redesigned to fit today’s figure and worked in contemporary yarns. A great way to get vintage style clothing that fits. I’m really looking forward to the release of volume 2.
Knitting Art Books
These 4 books all feature work from artists working with knitting or other yarn arts. They are all incredibly inspiring for knitters and non-knitters alike. They’re also great books to make people finally realise knitting isn’t all about scarves!
Knitted Creatures and Characters
Here are some really interesting books, they contain funny, strange and unusual creatures to be knit up. They are brilliantly photographed with funny scenes and backdrops for the characters.
Knitting Humour
As far as I’m aware Stephanie Pearl-McPhee, otherwise known as the Yarn Harlot, is the only person writing laugh out loud funny books about knitting. These are a few of my favourites. They’re all very good.
Knitting Rules! is the only one which includes patterns and was the book that inspired me to knit my first sock and made the whole process really easy!
